Physical Therapy Can Help You Get Healthy, Too! Part 1: Overview

This isnโ€™t popular to say or easy to admit as a healthcare clinician. But, our healthcare industry is heavily weighted toward sick care versus healthcare. ๐Ÿš‘๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿคข๐Ÿคฎ

Our healthcare industry does an excellent job of treating #acute #illness and managing #chronic conditions. If you fall and have low back pain, we have systems in place to get you immediate care; or if you have a chronic co-morbidity like diabetes, we know how to manage the signs and symptoms relatively well. ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ˜ท๐Ÿค’

What we are woefully inadequate at is focusing on health care; that is to say prevention and health promotion, helping people prior to needing the sick care model. We spend tons of money on medical services and next to nothing on #health behaviors - something we know accounts for at least 75% of the health variance in our population (along with environment). ๐Ÿ’Š๐Ÿ’Š๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿ’ฐ

But physical therapists have an enormous opportunity to be the go-to people for patients before they enter the sick care model. We spend much more time with patients than other providers and therefore should focus on improving not only a patient's mobility and strength, but also their HEALTH. ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ

This is going to be a multi-part series where I discuss how Motus Physical Therapy and Performance focuses on the ENTIRETY of each patient by focusing on 5 key elements of wellness and health: MOVE, FUEL, RECOVER, ENDURE, and CONNECT.

Stay tuned!
